In 1939, African-American contralto Marian Anderson was denied the use of Constitution Hall due to its "white performers only" policy. First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt, a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), which owned the hall, protested this decision, resigning from the organization in protest.
